In the glittering and ruthlessly competitive world of opera, Maria Callas is known simply as La Divina: the divine one. With her glorious voice and instinctive flair for the dramatic, she was the toast of the grandest international opera houses. Raised in Nazi-occupied Greece by an exploitative mother, her rise to fame came at a price. Daisy Goodwin brings to life a woman with extraordinary talent, unremitting drive and natural chic that made her a legend. By confronting the heartbreak of losing her lover Onassis to Jacqueline Kennedy, Callas found her true voice.

This is a novel not a biography and in it, Daisy Goodwin brings to life a woman whose extraordinary talent, unremitting drive and natural chic made her a legend. Callas was a heroine with a superpower, a voice that entranced the whole world, and someone who never doubted her own worth.
She became famous not just for her talent, but also for her private life. She wanted recognition, but for her art, not for being the elegant woman at the side of the world’s richest man. But suddenly her relationship with Onassis is over, and he leaves her for Jacqueline Kennedy, and Maria has to pick up the pieces.
Daisy Goodwin’s work as a television producer includes
Reader I Married Him, Bookworm, and The Nation’s Favourite Poems; she is also the creator of Grand Designs and the ITV programme Victoria. Daisy has also written three best-selling novels.
Antonia Fraser said: ‘I’ve been completely overwhelmed by Diva: by the pleasure of reading such a marvellous ardent, romantic yet utterly worldly book.’
Daisy will be in conversation with Ruth Pavey, a writer and journalist who particularly writes about contemporary fiction.

New York Times
bestselling author Daisy Goodwin tells the story of a scandalous love affair between the most celebrated opera singer in history, Maria Callas, and one of the richest men in the world. Callas’s glorious voice, instinctive flair for the dramatic and striking beauty made her the toast of opera houses all over the world. But when she met Aristotle Onassis she thought she had found someone who saw her for being the woman Maria, rather than being the superstar Callas. It’s a world filled with characters like Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor and, of course, former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. It’s all makes for a true Greek tragedy, told by Goodwin with extraordinary skill.
